Our "Beyond the Basics" Education Seminar is designed for participants who have basic angling skills and desire to explore new angling techniques and add to their experience. Trip includes three nights lodging and meal arrangements. There are two lighted piers on site for fishing and practicing your skills. Some activities may take place in the local area. The educational experience will be a combination of topic presentation, demonstrations, and hands on experience. There will be ample time to fish and practice what you have learned.

Lodging: Lodging will be at the Oak Island Lodge in Anahuac, Texas

We have a great workshop planned, including boat and kayak fundamentals and safety taught by Kimberly Sorensen, TPWD.

Activities include a session on tournament fishing and a tournament competition, casting competition, and a "Cook Your Catch" dinner on Saturday evening.

Clint Barghi, a popular Captain and guide will be our guest speaker Friday evening.

There will be time for fishing off the Oak Island Lodge piers, catching up with friends, and making new ones.

  • Kimberly Sorensen, TPWD Boating Education Manager, will be conducting two days of boating and kayaking education and training for this event.

  • Topics will include trailering and boat safety, launching and landing techniques and safety.

  • The kayak sessions will cover safety, rigging your kayak for fishing, understanding weather, anchoring, and wade fishing from your kayak.

  • A Tournament Fishing Panel Discussion is on the schedule, covering everything from fishing your first tournament to planning a winning strategy.

  • We will have a "Cook your Catch" demonstration and dinner on Friday evening.

  • Fun activities will include a Casting Competition and Event Tournament.

  • There will be free time to fish from the two piers located at the Lodge.

  • And this isn't all, we still have a few presentations we are finalizing.

Participants who do not have their Texas Boater Education Certificate are encouraged to complete the online course offered by TPWD prior to this event. This certificate is required for individuals born on or after September 1, 1993 to operate certain vessels on Texas public waterways.
